FRANCIS TOWN-(MaraviPost)-Mighty Wanderers have been eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup after a 7-6 defeat to Botswana’s Jwaneng Galaxy FC in a tense penalty shootout on Saturday evening, September 27, 2025.
The match ended 1-0 in favor of the hosts in regulation time, forcing the tie into penalties after a 1-1 aggregate draw.
The Nomads, who carried a slender 1-0 advantage from the first leg played at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe last week, went into the match full of confidence.
However, they faced a fired-up Galaxy side that dominated much of the first half, pushing Wanderers deep into their own half.
With the aggregate score tied at 1-1 after 90 minutes, the match went straight to penalties. The shootout was a nerve-wracking affair with both teams converting their spot-kicks with remarkable composure.
However, tragedy struck for the Nomads when Nannison Mbewe. His shot was brilliantly saved by the Galaxy keeper, sparking wild celebrations among the home fans and leaving Wanderers players and supporters in despair.
Speaking after the match, Wanderers head coach Bob Mpinganjira praised his players for their fighting spirit despite the painful loss.
“We gave it our all and I am proud of the boys. It’s always tough to lose on penalties, but this experience will make us stronger. We need to regroup and focus on our domestic campaign,” Mpinganjira said.
The loss marks the end of Wanderers’ continental journey this season but the team is expected to return home and immediately shift its attention to the TNM Super League, where they are still in the title race.
Meanwhile, Jwaneng Galaxy will progress to the next round of the CAF Confederation Cup, hoping to build on their victory and continue their pursuit of continental glory.
