BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Industrial Relations Court (IRC) has ruled that Castel Malawi Limited must pay MK417.7 million to 32 former employees who were unfairly dismissed.
The court found that the company’s actions violated the workers’ right to fair labor practices, led by Purity Chitalo.
The employees had taken Castel Malawi to court, alleging unfair dismissal and misrepresentation.

The company had retrenched staff between 2019 and 2020, citing economic challenges, but the court determined the process was flawed.
Castel Malawi has 30 days to appeal the ruling.
The IRC’s decision highlights the importance of fair labor practices and adherence to Malawi’s Employment Act, which provides guidelines for compensation in unfair dismissal cases.
