LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has finalized the establishment of Constituency Development Committees across all 229 constituencies in Malawi ready for impementation of Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

Minister Ben Phiri told the news conference on Wednesday that the committees are now fully operational and designed to strengthen coordination between local communities and central government on development priorities.

According to the minister, each CDC is made up of Members of Parliament, ward councillors, civil society organizations, Area Development Committee chairs, and traditional leaders.

This structure, he explained, ensures that development planning is inclusive and reflects input from both elected representatives and grassroots leaders.

“Members of Parliament play a key role in identifying development needs that require central government intervention and escalating them to Parliament,” Phiri said. “Councillors, on the other hand, handle ward-level priorities within the council structures.”

The minister noted that the CDCs will serve as a platform for harmonizing projects at constituency and ward levels, reducing duplication and improving accountability in the use of public funds.

The rollout is part of government’s broader decentralization agenda aimed at bringing decision-making closer to the people and ensuring that local needs inform national development planning.
