Chakwera must have clear stand on same-sex marriage

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Report that Minister of Information and Digitalization Moses Kunkuyu who is also campaign Director for Malawi Congress Party (MCP) said President Lazarus Chakwera is not in support of same-sex marriages in the country is not adding up.

Kunkuyu said this during a development rally organized by MCP at South Lunzu Primary School on Saturday.

The minister added that Chakwera values the union of a man and a woman.

“Everyone knows that Chakwera before becoming a President he was serving as Pastor and he once officiated marriages of a man and a woman. He has never officiated a marriage of a man and a fellow man.

“Apart from that, Chakwera is married to a woman and this is a clear indication that the President values the union of a man and woman period,” said Kunkuyu.

Kunkuyu’s remarks follow the recent protest by various faith groups in the country denouncing same-sex marriages.

This also follows the ongoing court case where some rights activists in the country want the court to declare same-sex marriages in the country legal.

The case is currently underway at the High Court in Blantyre and the case is being presided over by a panel of three Judges.

Chakwera has always avoided the topic even when he was the leader of the opposition in the Malawi Parliament.

Reverend Chakwera being a pastor, the matter could be easy as Christianity values don’t support same-sex marriages.

But Chakwera chooses quietness though ahead of the 2019 Malawi polls proposals for a referendum when elected to be the president.

Three years in power, Reverend Chakwera has never said a word on the matter.

Chakwera fails to buy a leaf from his counterpart on the matter, Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni and Paul Kagame of Rwanda who publically denounced same-sex marriages without waiting for court interpretation.

If indeed Chakwera is reverend, a Man of God without fear of losing aid from Western countries, he must come open to making a clear stand on same-sex marriage.

Chakwera must not live in denial of same-sex marriage.
