LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-President Lazarus Chakwera has pardoned Former Homeland Security Minister Uladi Mussa as part of Easter holiday celebrations.
Chakwera has also pardoned John Mussa who was convicted for being found with Chamba and former MEC Commissioner Linda Kunje’s Driver Jones Tewesa.
Minister of Homeland Security Kenneth Zikhale Ng’oma has confirmed the the pardoning of the trio.
The minister Ng’oma said the pardoned prisoners are those that committed minor offenses and have demonstrated good behavior during their stay in prison.
Mussa was sentenced to 6 years improvement for being found guilty to a corruption trial linked to passport case has been considered.
He said the pardon of the prisoners is an act of mercy in this festive season.
Ng’oma added that the prisoners that have being released are those who were charged with minor offences and have demonstrated good behavioral reform.
“It has pleased the state president Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera to pardon a total of 200 prisoners as part of Easter celebrations,the Constitution gives the mandate to the state president to pardon prisoners who have behaved well during the time of their stay in the prison,this is the time where we reconcile as a country “, Ng’oma said.
He said Chapter 89 (2) of the Constitution gives the president power to pardon convicted offenders, grant stays of execution of sentence, reduce sentences, or remit sentences.
The minister added that it requires consultation with an Advisory Committee on the Granting of Pardon, the composition and formation of which is determined by an Act of Parliament.
Last year, Chakwera pardoned 106 prisoners during the same period.
This comes barely months after Member of Parliament (MP) for Rumphi East, Kamlepo Kalua calls for the release of Uladi Mussa in the August house on the basis of political backgrounds.
Chakwera has so far pardoned over 1900 prisoners since he became Malawi president.
