DEDZA-(MaraviPost)-Over 93 Ethiopians who entered Malawi through Karonga on their way to South Africa last week managed to enter Mozambique through Dedza boarder after beating the security system in Malawi.
Security agencies failed to track down the illegal immigrants which uses the country Malawi as a get-way route to Mozambique.
Authorities at the Malawi Consulate in Tete, Mozambique on Sunday intercepted two buses carrying 55 and 65 passengers from Lilongwe on their way to South Africa for carrying illegal passengers.
According to Malawi Consul General in Tete Mozambique, Happy Saka, a total of 34 passengers have been sent back to Malawi because they had no travel documents.
Saka told Times on Sunday, April 9, 2023 evening that the office got a tip from Mozambican security Intelligence who are working very closely with his office that the two buses were travelling from Malawi to South Africa with illegal passengers on board.
According to Saka, the consulate, with the help of Mozambican Police, mounted a roadblock at Zambezi River and managed to intercept the buses.
Sakah said when he consulted Malawi Immigration Director General, Brigadier General Charles Kalumo, he was advised to hand over the illegal immigrants to Mozambican Police and Mozambican Immigration to facilitate their travel arrangements back to Malawi.
Saka added that the illegal passengers have told his office that they pay money in form of bribes to illegally exit and evade the eye of the Immigration Office and the Police in Malawi.
