LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The State has formally charged former Minister of Information Moses Kunkuyu with abuse of office and money laundering, marking the latest development in a widening corruption scandal involving senior officials from the previous administration.
Kunkuyu, who also serves as the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Director of Campaigns, was arrested on Monday after voluntarily surrendering to police.
He is being held at Kanengo Police Station pending a court appearance.
The charges against Kunkuyu stem from allegations of inciting violence during the funeral of former First Deputy Speaker of Parliament Madaitso Kazombo.
Kunkuyu’s lawyer, George Jivason Kadzipatike, has condemned the arrest, arguing that it undermines the rule of law and constitutional governance.
“We expect that Hon. Kunkuyu will be released by the police today. Otherwise, we shall conclude that the country is no longer governed in accordance with the law,” Kadzipatike said.
The arrest is part of a broader crackdown on former ministers and senior officials from the previous administration, with several high-profile figures facing corruption charges.
