Ghana football star to visit Malawi on HIV campaign: Asamoah Gyan

MZUZU (MaraviPost) — World sports celebrity and skipper of the Ghana National Team Asamoah Gyan will visit Malawi this Thursday for the ‘Protect the Goal’ campaign whose aim is to raise awareness of HIV and encouraging young people to commit themselves towards HIV prevention, a media statement from the Malawi government said.

Gyan will be accompanied by Steve Manager – his manager who is also Ghana’s Goodwill Ambassador of Protect the Goal.

“The campaign is one in a series of activities which the National AIDS Commission (NAC), UNAIDS and their partners are undertaking to re-invigorate HIV prevention in the country, particularly among young people.

“The campaign is seeking to contribute towards attainment of the three Zeros (zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination, and zero AIDS-related deaths) and in particular, the drive towards Zero New Infections, through the galvanizing power of football,” reads the statement in part.

According to the statement, the three-day visit will be climaxed by an event on Thursday in the commercial capital Blantyre where among others Malawi leader Professor Peter Mutharika will sign a ‘Global Ball’ re-affirming his commitment to HIV prevention.

Fifteen other African Heads of State have so far signed the ‘Global Ball’ which has now arrived in Malawi.

“Other planned activities include an interactive ‘Protect the Goal’ information session with young people, media interviews, radio talk show and a gala dinner with potential ‘Protect the Goal’ project sponsors during which the renowned Jazz artist Steve Bedi and Malawi’s Skeffa Chimoto will team up in a musical collaboration. Gyan is also expected to attend the Standard Bank football cup final game between Silver Strikers and (winner between Azam Tigers and Mafco) at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe on Saturday 30th August,” added the statement.
