HRCC lauds MCP for upholding court decision on new aspirants’ interests

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The country’s civil rights group under the banner Human Rights Consultative Committee (HRCC) commended Malawi Congress Party (MCP) for upholding High Court decision of allowing new members to contest for various positions during this year August 8, elective convention.

The commend comes barely hours after MCP withdraw an appeal case against High court determination that nullified the party’s NEC decision to bar new members from contesting in an elective convention.

HRCC chairperson Robert Mkwezalamba told The Maravi Post in an interview on Thursday morning, August 8 that move defines MCP’s pillars of respecting rule of law.

Mkwezalamba therefore appealed to other political parties to uphold inter-party democracy.

HRCC was not happy with earlier MCP National Executive Committee (NEC) decision to challenge High Court determination which allowed new party members to contest in its elective convention commencing today.

“By rescinding an appeal case against the Hon Pemba ruling on the matter, means MCP is upholding pillars of democracy. We want all other political parties to abide by their constitutions by accommodating all members in high positions. The developments should teach all parties lessons to avoid setting rules that simply aim at inconveniencing others from participating in such events!” appeals Mkwezalamba.

He further called on all contestants, old and new to accept the outcome of the convention and not raise any issues that have the effect of standing in these democratic processes.
