The Malawi court in the boarder district of Mwanza has on Monday, April 11, jailed a 27 year-old man to four years and 18 months with hard labour for being found guilty of Burglary and theft respectively.
Mwanza Police Station Public Relations Officer, Edward Kaunda confirmed to The Maravi Post in an interview the sentencing of Tayamika Chimphonda who committed the offense at Mchotseni village upon breaking into the house of Mrs. Hellen Chigwede.
According to the Police Publicist Kaunda, the Mwanza First Grade Magistrate Court head that the convict Chimphonda on March 7 this year broke into the house of Chigwede and stole a plasma screen valued at MK250, 000.00.
“Tayamika was arrested on April 5 and he appeared before Mwanza FGM court on April 11, 2016 where he pleaded guilty to charges of burglary and theft. Consequently, the state through prosecutor Sub/Inspector Lengani asked the court to give out a stiffer sentence because the offence he committed is serious one.
“Although, during mitigation Chimphonda pleaded for a lenient sentence because he has a family and relatives who depends on him but His worship Ran well Mangazi told him that if he knew that he has a family that depends on him he could have not committed the offence. Eventually, His worship Mangani jailed Tayamika both charges which the jail term and sentences will run concurrently”, explains Kaunda.
