MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Center for Health, Agriculture, Development, Research and Consultant has challenged Government and non governmental organisations to set up effort that will help to improve knowledge on sexual Reproductive Health Services (SRHS) among the youth living with disabilities in the country.

Speaking when presenting a survey report on improving youth friendly health services in Mzimba district, Bagrey Ngwira who is the Chief executive of the consultant that conducted the survey on behalf of the Plan International Malawi asked the stakeholders to work together in reaching the youth with disabilities as they have relatively lower knowledge with SRHS.

Ngwira said such development expose youths with disabilities to STIs and unwanted pregnancies.

“In the survey I conducted in the area of Traditional Authorities Ntwalo, Mwabulawo,Jalavikuwa and Khosolo reveals that among the youth, those living with disabilities have less or zero knowledge on sexual reproductive and health services.”

“This lack of information makes them more vulnerable of getting unwanted pregnancies and infected with STIs including HIV,” said Ngwira.

According to him, another big challenge for the youths with disabilities in the district is to access youth friendly health services in hospitals due to long distances.

Plan International Malawi Mzuzu Program Area Manager Chakufwa Mnthali concurred with Ngwira but said through the project he believe the problem will be reduced.

“We have already started training health personnel in interpreting sign language for easy communication and equip the youths with disabilities with SRHS knowledge ,” lamented Mnthali.

Mzimba District Health Officer Isaac Chidonthi hails Plan Malawi for coming to their rescue.

” As Mzimba hospital, it is really a challenge to reach out to the youths with SRHS massages in their community, as such those with physical disabilities have difficulties in accessing the services.” Said chidonthi.

He then urged other partners to come in for support saying Plan International Malawi only can not tackle the whole district.
