DEDZA-(MaraviPost)-Dedza District Council has expressed satisfaction over the role that youths in the district are playing in environmental management.
Acting district environmental officer for Dedza Dalitso Ndinda made the sentiments whilst commenting on what youth clubs in the district are doing in protecting the environment.
Ndinda among others said the council has engaged youths in the district in shoot regeneration in an effort to empower them with skills in environmental management.
“As a district council, we are concerned with wanton cutting down of trees in a number of forest reserves of the district, we have therefore drilled five youth networks in shoot regeneration and we are confident that more youths will actively participate in the initiative because the ones that have benefited from the initiative will pass on the skills to their colleagues in their respective areas,” said Ndinda.
He added, “we are hopeful that the youths will own the program. This will ensure that more trees are planted across the district, a development that will see improved rainfall patterns in their ateas.”
Asked on what the youths will do to sustain the program, chairperson for Kaphuka youth network Owen Posiyano said they will own the initiative so that it benefits the future generation.
Five youth networks from Traditional Authorities (T.As) Kaphuka, Chauma, Tambala, Kachindamoto and Kamenyagwaza have benefited from the training.
