LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) has sent a warning shot to the public against increased illegal fuel vending and illegal fuel service stations’ acting on the malpractice.
This is coming hot on the heels of looming scarcity of fuel in the country.

In a statement which Maravi Post has in possession, MERA says , the retail fuel service stations are reminded that their licencing conditions do not permit hoarding of petroleum products showing undue preference to, or discriminating against any person (s) with regard to the provision of petroleum products or services.
“MERA alongside other agencies mandated to enforce the law remain vigilant to protect consumers against such practices,”reads part of the statement
The statement also states that MERA will intensify spot checks and ensure offenders are held accountable and regulatory sanctions are imposed .
“MERA will, as appropriate suspend or revoke licenses of fuel service station operators involved in this malpractice,” further reads the statement.
Meanwhile, consumers are urged to report illegal fuel vending and retailers of petroleum products suspected of engaging on discriminatory and unscrupulous practices to the nearest police station .
