The main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP)’s Members of Parliament (MP) for Salima North West constituency, Dr. Jessie Kabwira on Christmas eve handed over ten bicycle ambulances worthy MK1.5 million to constituents in a bid to ease transportation of expected mothers to district hospitals.
The donation comes barely few months after four women were reportedly dead upon arrival at Salima district hospital due to delays in transportation which prompted the lawmaker seeking support from the well-wishers to come for rescue.
Speaking with The Maravi Post after presenting the bicycle ambulances to constituents at Group Village Headman (GVH) Madyakale, Traditional Authority (T.A) Khomedza, and Dr. Kabwira commended business person from the district for adhering to the urgent call of an ambulance saying the donation will ease mobility especially pregnant women who walk
long distance for medical checkups.
Kabwira therefore urged communities taking care of the ambulances which were ten in total for the intended purposes in a bid to serve the general populace transportation to the district hospital for further medication.
“Recently, we just lost four women and a man as were delayed for reference to Salima District Hospital for further treatment. This was caused due to lack of easy transportation therefore the coming in of the bicycle ambulance will lessen mobility. We commend the Salima based business man for responding quickly to our call. So, the tool must be used for intended purpose for the whole community”, appeals Dr. Kabwira.
The event attracted communities, Area Development Committee (ADC) members, chiefs, Ward Councilors and government officials and among others.
In receiving on behalf of T.A Khomedza, GVH Madyakale lauded their legislator for the effort in rescuing constituents saying the donation was timely with an assurance of taking good care of them.
“This is a timely intervention from a responsible legislator who always put her put first than personal interests. We are assuring her and those have had a hand in buying the ambulances that will take care of them for the continual usage of the tools to ease mobility
challenge communities have been subjected to when are in dire need of health services”, assures GVH Madyakale.
