In a bid to restore the pride of the Ngoni language and contribute to national development, the Mthwalo Culture and Development Association has announced the revival of the Mthwalo Cultural Celebrations, nearly seven decades after the last event was held.
The celebrations, scheduled for June 21, will take place in the village of Ezondweni, located near the Lunyangwa River in the Kasito Valley, Mzimba.
According to Nelson Mkandawire, Association Chairperson, the initiative aims to rehabilitate depleted forests and construct a school, among other objectives.
The area holds historical significance as the settlement site of Chief Mthwalo II in 1911, making it a fitting location for the celebrations.
The last official commemoration was held in 1956, and the association is eager to bring back the cultural event to promote the Ngoni language and heritage.
Misheck Yagontha Munthali, Chairperson of the Mthwalo Day Organising Committee, has appealed for financial and material support from the corporate sector to help meet the event’s estimated K20 million budget.
“We are counting on the support of well-wishers to make this event a success,” Munthali said, adding that, “The celebrations will not only promote our cultural heritage but also contribute to the development of our community.”
Inkosi ya Makhosi M’mbelwa V will be the guest of honour at the event, adding to the significance of the celebrations.
The association is confident that the revival of the Mthwalo Cultural Celebrations will bring people together and promote unity and cultural pride.
