MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-President Lazarus Chakwera called off the annual celebration of national independence day citing the surge in cases of Covid-19.

According to the president, between Saturday 4 July and 5 July, 2020, the number of people who have tested positive for the disease has increased from over 1, 400 to 1, 613 representing 7 percent increase.

The Malawi’s new Head of State has further asked Malawians to observe Covid-19 preventive measures such as social distancing, regular hand washing and constant use of face masks. He also announced that government will remove tax from all Covid-19 materials so as to ensure that Malawians are able to afford the same so they should protect themselves from the disease.

Meanwhile, the official inauguration of the President is expected to take place at Kamuzu Barracks where only one hundred people who are invited will be in attendance.

However, the President cancellation of the Independence Day celebration is ironic for he and his Tonse Alliance were all over the country during the campaign period conducting political rallies; a development which was against the the former Head of State’s declaration of national state of disaster in the face of the global pandemic of Covid-19.

Lately, Malawi has experienced an exponential surge in cases of Covid-19 with over 16 deaths so far.
