Six-year old Faith Mwangonde lives in Chilinde, Lilongwe. She suffers from an inherited muscle disease or an inborn an error of metabolism. The condition makes it hard for her to chew or swallow food; she also experiences muscle weakness. As a result, Faith is unable to walk around or be active for some time.
Because of this condition, Faith is also unable to attend school.
Medical doctors at the Kamuzu and Queen Elizabeth Central referral hospitals, tried the numerous treatment, however, these treatments have not altered Faith’s predicament.
The medics said her condition is rare in Malawi, and there is no expertise to handle it. They have since recommended that she seeks medical treatment in India.
An outreach by Faith’s mother to the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital and Medical research Institute (KDAH) in India, indicates Faith’s treatment would cost $13,700; an equivalent of MK10 million.
Faith’s family cannot afford to raise this money, however efforts to have her benefit from the Malawi Government’s external referral programme through the Ministry of Health, proved futile.
Meanwhile, Faith’s condition is daily deteriorating.
A compassionate person who never met her family in person, took up Faith’s health challenge and thus far she has raised almost K1 million.
“There is K9 million to go. If we could help in any way we can, Faith Mwangonde’s life could be saved,” the compassionate person pleads in a GoFundMe account opened for rescuing Faith.
