LILONGWE (Maravi Post)—Minister of sports and culture Grace Chiumia has apologized to Malawians on her controversial remarks to President Peter Mutharika as ‘life President’ Maravi Post has established. On Friday 5, 2016, Chiumia called Mutharika ‘life President’ during the fundraising dinner of the Mulhako wa Alhomwe in Lilongwe where he was guest of honor.
According to Chiumia who is also the Nkhata-bay lawmaker under the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), the remark was as a result of a slip of the tongue.
“I humbly apologize to Malawians for referring Mutharika as life President. I know that the speech was not good but I want to tell you that it was unplanned,” said Chiumia.
“Everyone knows that the term of the President is ten years of which I respect too. Therefore, I apologize,” she added.
However, the Catholic Church through the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) trashed the remarks saying it is against the constitutional.
Some social commentators include Rafic Hajat call Mutharika to also apologize in order to clear the mess.
According to them, despite Chiumia’s apologetic worlds, it means nothing to Malawians especially if Mutharika is silent on the matter.
