MaraviPost iReport: President Peter Mutharika has reiterated that the existence and promotion of diverse Technical Community Colleges in the country promotes education standards and economic transformation, saying Mponela marks the milestone to success of country’s development.

Mutharika made the remarks on Friday at Mponela Primary School ground in Dowa when he addressed a gathering during the launch of Mponela Technical Community Colleges.

Said Mutharika: “The country has everything we need to develop.  God gave us everything, what we need is the right mindset, the right development capacity, and the right skills for our communities to transform”.

He expressed optimism that Mponela Technical Community College is part of a comprehensive education that teaches people to do things more than know things.

“It is the education of people that drives us to move forward with the rest of our youths and our communities. This is the fundamental paradigm shirt and a cornerstone of economic transformation in Malawi. The colleges can make a real impact on people’s lives and reverse the gears of poverty”, he lamented.

In addition, he reveals that Malawi cannot achieve sustainable poverty eradication if people cannot have decent jobs. The skills and knowledge acquired in community colleges provide platform for students not only to be employees in white-collar jobs but also more than employers in production.

Minister of Labour, Youth and Manpower development Henry Mussa, in his sentiments concurred with Mutharika saying that, the community colleges project empowers communities with the spirit of self-dependency.

“Developing skills lays foundations for industrialization. Those who have the virtue of patience will live to remember that it is skills development that took Malawi to the road to industrialization”, commented Mussa.

Mussa commended the government for embarking on the expansion drive in colleges. The project also is capable of creating more jobs through technical, entrepreneurial and vocational education.

In Africa youths continue seeking white collar jobs after finishing their University education while shunning entrepreneurship. However, Countries such as Germany, China, India, Japan, Brazil and the like have become producing and export-leading economies because they saw the need for technical, entrepreneurial and vocational education. Therefore, for success of country’s development Technical Community Colleges has proven effective.
