BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Institute of Public Opinion and Research (Ipor) says President Lazarus Chakwera of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) is the most recognised presidential candidate, while Jane Ansah of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is the most recognised running mate in the September 16 General Election.
Former president Peter Mutharika of the DPP is the second most recognised presidential candidate, with Vitumbiko Mumba of the MCP the second most recognised running mate.
Ipor on Thursday, September 4, 2025 presenter its second pre-election survey in Blantyre where it also released findings on the most popular presidential candidate in the September 16 General Election.
On the other hand, Mutharika, who is also the DPP presidential candidate, has once again emerged as the frontrunner in the 2025 presidential race, securing 41 percent of the vote in a new national survey.
The survey, conducted between August 14 and 27 and released in Blantyre, places Chakwera of MCP second with 31 percent.
The Ipor report put UTM’s Dalitso Kabambe on third with six percent, followed by Atupele Muluzi of the United Democratic Front (UDF) at three percent, while former president Joyce Banda of the People’s Party (PP) polled two percent.
In July, Ipor released its first pre-election survey which showed Mutharika leading with 43 percent against Chakwera’s 26 percent. Kabambe came third with five percent, Muluzi had two percent and Banda one percent.
Separately, Afrobarometer’s December 2024 survey indicated that if elections were held in August last year, DPP would have secured 43 percent, MCP 29 percent, UTM seven percent and UDF two percent.
