Chipiku league ignites soldiers derby

By Edwin Mbewe

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Airborne Rangers the giants of Parachutes, who are undefeated in four games they have played clash with their arc rivals Support Battalion FC on Saturday at MAFCO Ground.

The two MDF sides have two different missions to accomplish by the end of 2022 Chipiku Stores Premier Division season.

Airborne Rangers FC are looking forward to return in the elite league where they got relegated along side Wizards FC in the 2014/2015 season after spending just one season as they were promoted in 2013/2014 season.

Support Battalion are aiming at getting promotion into the elite league for the first time or finishing in top 3.

These missions make this soldiers’ derby be more exciting and obviously spectators at Malawi Armed Forces College Ground should anticipate a tough battle.

Former Silver Strikers FC and Airborne Rangers FC player Assed Ayam, who is now the head coach for the Parachute Battalion Airborne, is optimistic of overpowering their fellow soldiers on Saturday saying they want to continue with their good record of the season.

He added that preparations are going on very well and all players who sustained injuries will be fully recovered ahead of this derby.

He also said that, as Airborne Rangers FC they have special strategies to use on how to punish their counterparts.

Jonnex Mpondawaya, Coach for Support Battalion FC, said they are equally ready to face Airborne Rangers and is upbeat to get maximum points.

He therefore asked CRFA to allocate officiating panel from outside Salima saying whenever they meet their fellow Soldiers they get disappointed by men in black uniforms.

“We are aiming at grabbing the championship this season, we will be focused to not lose points unnecessarily in every game we play”, Mpondawaya Said.

Last week, in Annual Malawi Defence Force Sports festival, Rangers ushered out Support Battalion after defeating them by 2 goals to 1, and defeated them 4-1 in a friendly match.

Support Battalion have been finding it difficult to beat Airborne Rangers for ages which the best result to them has been a draw.

However, Airborne Rangers depend on Raymond Dennis Yawali, the current top goal scorer in group C, Henry Mulaleya, Chimwemwe Mhone, Anjiru Mpalira and Dalitso Makunganya.

Rangers are on top of group C with 12 points from 4 games.

If they win this derby they will have collected 15 points from 5 games and they will be assured of qualifying to round of 16 while Support Battalion are on position 3 with 6 points from 4 games.

They have won 2 and lost 2.

The win will see them remaining on third position as second placed Villa FC have 10 points already while them will have 9 points.
