BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The highly anticipated visit by the world football governing body, FIFA, President, Gianni Infantiano, to Malawi today 27th November, 2019, has been called off at an eleventh hour due to poor state of Chileka International Airport in Blantyre.

According to press statement released today by Football Association of Malawi (FAM) General Secretary, Alfred Gift Gunda, the visit of the FIFA boss has been cancelled until further notice.

“The Football Association of Malawi regrets to advise that the visit of the FIFA President Gianni Infantino to Malawi which was scheduled for today Wednesday 27th November 2019 has been postponed until further notice.”

“This is due to the ongoing rehabilitation works on the Chileka International Airport main runway which makes it not possible for the Presidential Jet carrying the FIFA President and his entourage to land. After carrying out a full assessment of the secondary runway, FIFA Aviation at the last minute ruled that they couldn’t take a chance to land at Chileka Airport for safety reasons.” reads the statement in part

Infantiano was expected to land in the country today to, among other things, check on the trends FAM has registered, so far, in developing football.

Gianni Infantiano, who is a Swiss-Italian national, ascended to FIFA Presidency in 2016.

He replaced Sepp Blatter who served on the position for three consecutive terms.
