KARONGA-(MaraviPost)-Trevor Kajawa’s reign as Karonga United coach got off to a superb start after seeing his side earn a thumping 4-1 victory over an out-of-sorts Ekwendeni Hammers in a TNM Super League match played on Sunday.
The win which was earned courtesy of goals from Ellie Kayombo, Allen Chihana, and a brace from debutant Mwisho Youngson is only Karonga’s third win at home so far this 2023 league campaign.
The encounter played at the Karonga Stadium in front of a sizable partisan crowd, saw the host begin the game strongly.
Josiah Duwa had the first attempt on goal for Karonga but his effort went narrowly wide in the 4th minute of the game after being set up by Allen Chihana who himself also saw an effort go over the bar in the 12th minute.
However, the home side finally capitalized on their dominance in the 24th minute as Ellie Kayombo superbly curled in from 20 yards to give the host a deserved lead.
Allen Chihana doubled Karonga’s lead in the 35th minute as he finished off a right-wing cross from Youngson.
The host’s dominance continued in the second half as the superb Youngson capped off his man-of-the-match performance as he headed in Karonga’s third in the 53rd minute after being set up by Duwa’s cross.
With 10 minutes to go, Youngson grabbed a brace as he neatly tapped in another debutant Jolly Mfune’s pass following a counterattack.
Despite grabbing a consolation goal through substitute Brian Phiri, the visitors had no answer for Karonga’s display under new tactician Kajawa.
In a post-match interview the newly named Karonga United coach Trevor Kajawa expressed delight with his boys’ display and performance in the thumping victory.
“I am really happy with our performance today, we were fantastic from minute one to the end and the margin of victory was well deserved,” said a buoyant Kajawa.
However, Ekwendeni Hammers assistant coach Lackson Nyoni, admitted that his side was second best in the encounter.
“I thought our attitude was not what we expected it was as if the players gave up in trying to win the game from the start hence the defeated was what we deserved,” he said.
With the victory Karonga United has moved a step on the league standings to 11th with 21 points from 17 games while Ekwendeni remains in sixth with 25 points from 18 games.
