What Kind of Girl?: An African Child Caught Between Worlds is an evocative coming of age story that will mentally teleport you to Malawi Africa

Boston, MA- Austin Macauley Publishers are proud to present Professor Caroline Kautsire in her debut publication of her memoir, What Kind of Girl?, released on July 31st, 2020.

A new and visionary writer from Malawi, Caroline Kautsire recounts the awkward, comedic, and confusing story of growing up with the competing norms and values of American, British and Malawian culture. What Kind of Girl? is a “page-turning” story that attempts to connect cultures and widen an audience’s understanding about the realities of modern African life. Readers will imaginatively travel to Malawi to experience its culture and tradition and see how Malawians deal with the nation’s issues of poverty, class and gender. But the book is careful to portray Africa not as a “Third World” stereotype, but as a real place with real families.

Young Caroline’s journey will also resonate with the stories of other girls around the world who are struggling to come to terms with their own identities. Hers is a story that will awaken people to their own coming of age experiences and inspire questions such as, “What kind of person have I chosen to be?” or “What kind of person am I becoming?”

What Others Are Saying

“Before reading this book, I knew nothing of Malawi, and I think American readers fail to understand distant places until they read a good book about them. To your great pleasure, you will often find that something you thought was far away and exotic is really something recognizable and human. This all happens in What Kind of Girl?” -Professor Steven Dooner, Quincy College

“Caroline’s voice is so prevalent in her storytelling, it is as though I can hear her speaking her words right to me…The eloquence in which Caroline speaks and writes indicates a careful understanding of the world around her and within herself.”– Kelly McGrath

A really clear, evocative book of one girl’s experience of growing up in Malawi… A good, and fast read, and one I would recommend.” – Susan Kambalu

The book can be purchased from Amazon, Barnes & Noble or the Austin Macauley website.
