BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-In a groundbreaking development, Malawian national Helen Buluma has been appointed as the new Commission Secretary to the Lesotho Highlands Water Commission (LHWC), marking a significant milestone as the first woman to hold this position since the project’s inception in 1986.
Buluma’s appointment is a testament to her exceptional leadership skills and expertise, garnered from her previous role as Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Oil Company of Malawi (Nocma).
The Lesotho Highlands Water Commission is a bi-national body comprising representatives from the Kingdom of Lesotho and the Republic of South Africa.
The commission plays a critical role in overseeing, advising, approving, and monitoring the Lesotho Highlands Water Project – a multi-billion-dollar infrastructure project designed to transfer water from Lesotho’s Orange-Senqu River to South Africa’s water-scarce Gauteng province.
As Commission Secretary, Buluma will provide administrative support to both delegations and serve as the primary channel of communication between the LHWC and external stakeholders.
