LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)—UTM, one of the key Tonse Alliance partners, has condemned the attacks on journalists in Mulanje and Phalombe that took place on Friday, May 29, 2020 when Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima was conducting whistle stop rallies to canvass votes for Malawi Congress Party (MCP) leader Lazarus Chakwera in the Lhomwe belt.
In a statement signed by UTM publicity secretary Chidanti Malunga, it has been revealed that three journalists sustained injuries after some thugs, believed to be DPP supporters, pelted stones at the vehicle they were travelling in en-route to Phalombe.
“UTM would like to condemn in the strongest terms the barbaric attacks by self-confessed DPP/UDF operatives on journalists covering the whistle stop rallies by the UTM/MCP Alliance in Mulanje and Phalombe on Friday May, 2020.
“It is sad that the vehicle carrying the journalists was particularly targeted and three media practitioners sustained injuries in the line of duty. These professionals did not commit any offence and were only performing their noble duty of gathering information for their respective audience as we build up to the fresh presidential elections. Any attack on them is, therefore, an attack on the very democracy their involvement in the process is supposed to promote,” the statement reads in part.
UTM has further extended word of solidarity to the affected journalists and the whole media fraternity following incident and it has beseeched all supporters of the UTM/MCP Alliance to remain calm in the face of all the barbaric acts while waiting for a new Malawi.
UTM has also assured all journalist that the sacrifice they have made will not go unnoticed and with the new Malawi that is coming after the fresh presidential election, press freedom will be guaranteed both in word and deed.
The party has warned the masterminds behind the diabolic acts that they will face the low soon or later and that no amount of intimidation will not stop the change that all Malawians have been waiting for.
