LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chief Elections Officer Andrew Mpesi is still in custody following his arrest over office vehicle abuse charges.
Mpesi’ private lawyer Chrispine Ndalama claims that police locked his client without a warrant of arrest.
On Thursday, February 26, Ndalama disclosed thst Mpesi was still in police custody as efforts to get police bail has proven futile.
Ndalama believes that the men in uniform simply want Mpesi in their custody until the lapse of the 48-hour rule period.
The lawyer is baffled that it was fiscal police that arrested Mpesi despite the matter being an administrative issue.
Ndalama noted that the condition of service for the MEC CEO allows his spouse to drive his vehicle.
National police deputy spokesperson, Alfred Chimthere, says police will comment on the matter once the case goes to court.
Mpesi was arrested in Lilongwe on Wednesday on a charge of abuse of office after another person not an employee of MEC was found driving his vehicle.
