LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera has asked the ministry of health to set up a meeting to discuss the challenges that health workers are facing.
He said this when launching the 2020 international year of the nurse and Midwife in Lilongwe.
Chakwera said the meeting will help to find lasting solutions to the problems the ministry face
He further said Nurses and Midwives have to be recognised as national heroes, describing all institution that are giving support to educate the health workers as true partners in the work of building the country.
On his part Shouts Simeza president of the National Organisation Nurses and midwives said they are facing multiple challenges including the high vacancy rate of 50%.
According to him such was the problem despite the country having qualified health workers many of whom were yet to be recruited.
Besides Simeza told President Chakwera some nurses and midwives were using their personal money to buy uniforms contradicting contractual provisions of the profession.
The year of the nurse and midwife was designated to acknowledge the commendable work of nurses and Midwives globally.
The event was being held under the theme ‘Celebrate, Demonstrate, Mobilise and Unite.
