MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-While government is preparing to hold memorial service at Nthungwa in Chikangawa Forest which is around Nkhatabay district on June 10 this year where President Lazarus Chakwera is expected to preside over, this publication has learnt that family to the late Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima has planned similar service at Nsipe, in Ntheu district.
The late Chilima was among eight people who lost their lives during the Chikangawa plane crash on 10th June, 2024.
Both, government and late Chilima’s family has confirmed the development to the media.
Moses Kunkuyu who is government spokesperson while confirming the development said President Chakwera values Chilima and all those who died in the plane crash hence his decision to have memorial service at the same time and place.
Kunkuyu however said government will meet with SKC family over the same today Tuesday.
SKC family through Ben Chilima while acknowledging government’s intention said “as a family we have already made plan to hold SKC memorial service at Nsipe in Ntheu district.”
According to him, the late SKC was a Church man and that they would like to honor him in the same way.
“We started the preparation some two months ago and we will continue with it. But I can confirm that today Tuesday will indeed have a meeting with government officials on the same, and as family we just want to hear their part,” said Ben Chilima.
On other hand, UTM has stopped its earlier plan of building a memorial tower at Nthungwa in Chikangawa in honor to its party founder SKC.
This is because government has similar plan according to UTM spokesperson Felix Njawala.
“Yes, we have cancelled our plan because government has the same plan,” said Njawala.
