Suspected body snatching for ‘bone extraction’ in Malawi’s Machinga district

BLANTYRE (Maravipost)–Unknown people are said to be exhuming and extracting bones from dead bodies in Traditional Authorities Chowe and Kapoloma in Malawi’s eastern district of Machinga.

The bodies are being exhumed at night and dumped after extracting bones from them, according to one of the villagers, Hilda Njerenje.

Machinga Police also confirmed the development, saying law enforcers are now working around clock to deal with the culprits.

“So far, we have recorded three cases,” said Machinga Police spokesperson Andrew Mayawo.

It is believed that human bones are, among others, used to produce charms to make one rich, according to Mayawo.

In another development, Police in Zomba have arrested two people to answer murder and burglary charges.

The suspects, identified as Fletcher Chilipa, 20 and Collen Kausiwa Mbendera, are believed to have broke into the house Dr Annie Chiponda, a lecture a Chancellor College in Zomba where they stole various items worth millions of Kwacha after allegedly killing a 65 year-old guard.
