KARONGA-(MaraviPost)-UTM Party torch-bearer for the Karonga Central Constituency Parliamentary by-election Frank Mwenefumbo has spit fire on Malawi Electro Commission (MEC) for attempting to bring confusion and panic to voters by warning to postpone the highly anticipated Tuesday’s polls due to alleged political violence during the campaign period.
Speaking in an interview after winding-up his campaign at Mwenelondo on Thursday, November 5, 2020 a fully charged Mwenefumbo, said he saw no justification in MEC’s warning to cancel the upcoming by-election at a such a late stage of campaigning.
He said, it was very unfortunate that some people were coming up with conclusions over the alleged violence on speculations.
“It was not necessary for anyone to warn that they would call-off the elections as we have had three month of campaigning and no violence has taken place hence the warning has brought unnecessary panic to the voters which is very unfortunate,” a charged Mwenefumbo warned.
Never the less the veteran politician, appealed to his supporters not to retaliate to those individuals who are perpetrating violence in the constituency.
“My proven track-record of transforming the area in my three terms of member of parliament has got my rival competitors running scared hence their followers have resulted in violence to frustrate me but they can’t,” he warned.
However, reacting to Mwenefumbo’s sentiments MEC’s Director of Communications and Public Relations SangwaniMwafulilwa, said MEC’s message is clear to the candidates, political party leaders and everyone else based in Karonga central.
He said, candidates signed a code of conduct hence urged them to abide by this including party followers.
“We are warning all candidates and their followers to desist from violence whoever wants the by-election to proceed should hid this warning stop, violence,” he warned.
