Former President of the Football Association of Malawi (FAM), Walter Nyamilandu Manda, has announced plans to launch a football tournament and netball competition in the southern region, specifically in Nsanje District, this coming Saturday.

In a post shared on his official Facebook page, Nyamilandu revealed that the tournament will be funded to the tune of K10 million, with the goal of developing sports talent and reviving excitement and entertainment among the local communities.

He explained that, as someone who is deeply passionate about sports, there is nothing more fulfilling than seeing sporting activities thriving in the region where he was born and raised.

Nyamilandu’s announcement comes at a time when he reportedly informed some traditional leaders last Friday that he intends to contest as a Member of Parliament in the constituency, although he has not yet made an official declaration to the media.

By investing in a sports tournament of this scale, Nyamilandu is not only reinforcing his love for sports but also aligning himself with the aspirations and recreational needs of the people of Nsanje.

His initiative signals a strong commitment to community development, using football and netball as tools for uniting people, nurturing youth talent, and offering positive engagement platforms.

The proposed tournament is likely to attract young players, coaches, and supporters, offering them an opportunity to showcase their skills while fostering unity and pride within the community.

It also reflects a broader vision of leveraging sports as a catalyst for social development, youth empowerment, and possibly even political engagement.

Whether or not Nyamilandu officially enters the political arena, his current efforts are already making a mark, and the planned tournament is poised to leave a lasting legacy in Nsanje.

Through this gesture, he is setting an example of how former sports administrators can continue to contribute to grassroots development even after leaving formal office.

The tournament could also serve as a launching pad for identifying future football and netball stars who may eventually rise to national or international recognition.

As the people of Nsanje anticipate the kickoff this weekend, many are hopeful that this initiative will not only entertain but also inspire a renewed spirit of community and opportunity in the region.

Nyamilandu’s passion for sports, coupled with his desire to serve his home district, paints a picture of a leader who values both talent development and social progress.

All eyes will be on Nsanje this Saturday as the district embraces this exciting sporting event, with the hope that it becomes an annual tradition that uplifts lives and strengthens local pride.
