AFORD condemns attack on leader Enoch Chihana in Kasungu

2 Min Read

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) has strongly condemned the violent attack on its President, Enoch Kamzingeni Chihana, which took place today in Kasungu.

According to AFORD, the ambush was carried out by suspected thugs aligned to the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), in what the party has described as a direct attack on constitutional democracy and political freedom.

Party officials alleged that the vehicle used in the incident belongs to Chikondi Kampachike, who has been identified as the prime suspect in orchestrating the attack.

Reports indicate that Kampachike, referred to as “Fada,” was attempting to stage an assault on Chihana’s convoy during his engagement in Kasungu.

However, his efforts to carry out the attack failed, and AFORD supporters have since warned that the law must take its full course.

The party further stressed that the matter is criminal in nature and urged the police to exercise their authority by swiftly arresting and prosecuting those involved.

AFORD leaders condemned the culture of political violence, insisting that such acts are an insult to the democratic gains Malawi has achieved since the advent of multiparty democracy.

They emphasized that political competition must remain peaceful, and that intimidation or attempts to harm political leaders will not be tolerated in a constitutional democracy.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that Kampachike has since been apprehended and could be facing imprisonment at Maula Prison if found guilty of the attempted attack.

Concluding Analysis

The attack on Enoch Chihana is a serious reminder of the fragility of Malawi’s political environment as the country heads towards the 2025 general elections.

The identification of suspects linked to the attack raises questions about political accountability and the need for strong law enforcement action.

If the police and judiciary act decisively, it will restore public trust in the country’s democratic institutions.

Failure to do so, however, could embolden political violence and weaken the principles of constitutional democracy in Malawi.
