This sounds like witch-hunting, selective justice, unfair and unjust. Let it be. All thieves who stole taxpayers’ money under the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) regime must be arrested, convicted and jailed now!!! It is the most programmatic means of cracking down the rampant corruption which is derailing economic progress in Malawi.
News that Henry Mussa and Gideon Munthali have been convicted of abuse of office is heart soothing in the wake of stamping out corruption as it has sent warning signals to would-be public office abusers.
I would personally pray that all perpetrators of corruption, regardless of any political affiliation, be apprehended, prosecuted, convicted and handsomely jailed.
Unfortunately, Chakwera’s government has deliberately created a conducive environment to cushion all Tonse Alliance thieves from being prosecuted.
The Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) seems to concentrate on investigating corruption cases that involve members of the former regime. Imagine no formal statement has been uttered pertaining to Dr. Saulos Chilima’s and Mr. Eisenhower Mkaka ‘s involvement in Sattar’s corrupt deals despite the National Crime Agency (NCA) in the United Kingdom and other whistle blowers allegedly implicating them on the same.
In as far as fighting corruption is concerned, the other two arms of government are utterly compromised. Till now, the National Assembly has not enacted any law that will make the ACB fully independent from political interference. On the other hand, some judges who are allegedly implicated in corruption scandals are left scot free to preside over the very same corruption cases. As a result, judges have resolved to protect some corruption suspects who are perceived to be affiliated to the current regime.
Even President Chakwera is highly compromised in fighting against corruption. Just before 2020 fresh presidential election, President Chakwera promised Malawians that his government would investigate on the proceeds of sale of the presidential jet which was championed by the former president, Mrs. Joyce Banda, who later masterminded the formation of the Tonse grand coalition.
Chakwera, however, later changed tune when Joyce Banda’s Peoples Party joined the bandwagon of the Tonse Alliance. He then contradicted himself that his government could investigate such a case because the DPP government had failed to do so for the past 6 years. This smacked of changing of a goal post fallacy.
So if ACB can’t prosecute Tonse Alliance corruption suspects and if courts are shielding them too, then the only practicable way is to convict all DPP thieves now.
So when regime changes in 2025, Tonse Alliance thieves will face jail as well.
This is the only pragmatic means to cleanse Malawi from the diabolical chuckles of corruption.
