The Malawi Army claims they surrounded Professor Peter Mutharika’s house to offer protection. However speaking to journalists in Blantyre, Mutharika said this was as shocking development as he never expected the army to surround his house without telling him what was wrong first.
“I received no communication whatsoever apart from hearing that soldiers were at my house apparently to search for something,” said Mutharika.
Kakhuta Banda an army spokesman confirmed that ‘yes’ the Army was there to provide security for the likely next President of Malawi who is leading in the unofficial vote counting. Things are tense in Malawi as the sitting President Amai Joyce Banda appears to be having difficulty accepting the outcome of the elections.
Peter Mutharika however has assured the outgoing President that he seeks no retributions and will concentrate on solving the countries problems and reconciliation.
